I'm installing Mandrake 10.1 on my PC and I'm having a problem
with the CD player. There is no sound.

The CD software is KsCD. When I place a
CD in the CD player, a KsCD window pops up. It shows the
sound track advancing, the author of the CD, the number
and name of the sound track. It also shows volume at 40%.

I know the speakers are good since I took them off a working
PC with sound. There is a always the chance that there
is hardware is failing, but I'll ignore that for now.

When I look at sound in the Mandrakelinux control center,
it lists the sound card with the following with the
information shown at the end of this post.

Can anyone help with this sound problem?

Thank you in advance.

Can we assume you have looked on the back of the cdrom and verifed the
little 4 pin audio cable is hooked between the cdrom and motherboard?

No. This is an external DVD writer connected via a USB 2.0 cable.
My assumption is that audio data gets transferred from the write
to the PC via the USB cable. Is this a bad assumption?

Oops, disregard my previous reply. I'm working on a question
about my DVD write and I neglected to my a context switch in my
head.

Yes, I double checked the audio on the CD Player and it is connected.

I'm sorry, disregard my previous reply. I'm working on
an issue with my DVD writer and I did not make a context
switch back to the CDROM.

The answer to you question is 'yes'. I did check that the audio
cable is connected to the CDROM player.
