When trying to play a dvd I get no joy using xine, kaffeine or mplayer.
All fail to read/open the dvd.

Having spent many hours searching forums etc have found no solutions.

The error:

The source can't be read.
Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data
(e.g: no disc in
drive). (/dev/dvd)

error details:

Sounds like a codec problem. what kind of file are you reading: is it the
MRL file? or is it a VOB file? what about other DVD's, did you try?

I am also new to linux and just installed the same suse 9.2 pro and had
the same problem. the cure??? I needed to find and install a package
called libdvdcss this is the file which decodes your dvd's. it does not
come with any dvd players, yet it is essential for playback of almost all
store bought dvd's. the problem I think is that it is illegal for them to
offer it because the package once installed will decode dvd's regardless
of what program you are running ie. dvd ripper, etc. sadly the etc.
includes all dvd players. I can't remember where I finally found it but i
will look for you (i'm in windows right now & don't have access to my
browser bookmarks where it is) I found it by typing "libdvdcss" into
google. i'll post the address later. have fun!!!
