I currently have a dial-up modem as my connection to the internet, but
recently I purchased a cable modem and am going to have MediaCom (Des
Moines, Iowa) set me up.

Currently, I am running a RedHat based network, with my internet gateway
running RedHat 8.

The Modem I got is a Belkin F5D5530-W model. What issues should I expect
in setting the service up? Is there any FAQ's out there on Linux and
cable modems/Mediacom. I have never used anything but dial-up modem
before. Should I upgrade the RH 8 box to a version of Fedora, or is RH 8
secure enough? I currently have a basic firewall using iptables running,
it uses ip masqurading and has all of the ports closed.

Rejoice! Most cable modems are simply ethernet devices. A simple
connection from your NIC to the modem, get your info via DHCP, and
you're all set. Add to that that *I* usually get ~366kB/s downstream,
and you stand to be pretty happy...

You'll be amazed how much easier this will be to setup than dial-up.

I still like to see a hardware firewall on all my broadband users since
they are inexpensive and allow sharing the connection.

Assuming hardware firewall ~ router then I disagree. Adding a second NIC
allows sharing. For ease of use try firestarter.
