What do the /var/lib/dpkg/ subdirectories do?

I am documenting the package management and installation processes.

Ther appear to be some subdirectories in /var/lib/dpkg, as follows:

/var/lib/dpkg/methods

This appears to contain three empty directories on my system:

/var/lib/dpkg/methods/disk
/var/lib/dpkg/methods/floppy
/var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt

There are also the following empty directories:

/var/lib/dpkg/parts/
/var/lib/dpkg/updates/

I have also have a couple of files that I don't know the purpose of:

/var/lib/dpkg/cmethopt
/var/lib/dpkg/methlock
/var/lib/dpkg/statoverride

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Regards,

Mark.
