USB flash stick problems

kubuntu 6.06

I've tried several different USB flash sticks, and they all "sort of"
work, but they all have some issues. Usually, when I plug them in, it
is auto-deteted, konq opens up, I can see the files. BUT, another
"Mounting /dev/sbd1" windows comes up and never goes away! Then, when
I go to "safely remove", the operation does not complete in a
reasonable amount of time, if at all. Weird!

I tried simply hot-plugging, and I've also tried having a candidate
flash-stick installed while booting (which has helped in the past),
but the end result is not working smoothly.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Looks like I may have found the (rather odd) solution. Don't use a
blank USB stick. I found that, if I created a half-dozen empty
directories on the stick (using Windows), it then will auto-mount in
kubuntu just fine. Weird but true.
